Bridlington is primarily a holiday resort, situated on the East Yorkshire Coast. It is a popular centre for touring or just having a relaxing time on holiday. The Leisure World Complex, with a theatre, indoor bowls, fitness centre and swimming pools provides all-weather entertainment for the whole family . The Spa Theatre Complex has been recently restored at a cost of £18m . The tidal harbour, complete with yachts and various pleasure craft, is also a major centre for the shellfish industry.
The town has recently undergone extensive renovation, with the esplanades on both sides of the harbour been completely resurfaced and a potential marina with hotels and all modern conveniences currently under discussion. In the centre is a new shopping mall, The Promenades, which has been constructed with all the shops under cover along with an indoor market. This was recently expanded.
Well worth a visit is Bridlington Old Town, with the historic early 12th century Priory Church and the Bayle Museum, housing the town archive and other historical artefacts of local interest. The nearby High Street is often used in film sets as the quaint mix of shop fronts retain much of their original character.
A short drive to the north takes you to Scarborough, Whitby, and many small small villages along the coast which are all very picturesque. Within the surrounding area we have the North Yorkshire Moors with the steam railway from Pickering to Grosmont, travelling through ‘Heartbeat’ country. To the south is Beverley and the port of Kingston Upon Hull, with the City of York just an hour away.
On the road to Flamborough Head is Danes Dyke, a local beauty spot leading down to it’s own beach. Beyond the village of Flamborough, you will find North Landing & the lighthouse. Also at South Landing is stationed the Flamborough lifeboat which guards this very treacherous part of the coast line.
